What Does Vaginal Rejuvenation Entail and How Long Is the Recovery?

What Does Vaginal Rejuvenation Entail and How Long Is the Recovery?

A woman’s body undergoes incredible changes throughout her life. But from puberty to childbirth to menopause, each stage can leave physical reminders — in areas both seen and hidden.

One of those hidden, yet important, areas is the genital region, which can stretch and change throughout the reproductive stages of a woman’s life. For some women, those changes result in stretched labia, leading to concerns about appearance and comfort.

To address these changes, leading plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas McHugh at McHugh Plastic Surgery offers vaginal rejuvenation services. Here’s a look at how we can restore your confidence in intimate situations, as well as improve your comfort, through vaginal rejuvenation.

The female genital journey

We briefly referenced some changes that can occur and we want to expand on this a little. The changes we’re referring to occur outside your vagina — in your genitals. More specifically, they develop in your labia minora, which are the tissues that surround your vaginal opening and are located inside the hair-bearing labia majora.

Over time, these tissues can get stretched out and become more lax. As a result, the labia minora can hang below the outer labia, as well as become longer and more asymmetrical.

The laxity in these tissues can lead to tugging and twisting, especially with tight clothing like swimsuits, and during activities like riding a bike or, worse, having intercourse.

The reason behind these changes boils down to several factors, including:

Whatever is behind your looser labia minora, the good news is that we have a solution that will bring you more comfort and confidence.

Vaginal rejuvenation through a labiaplasty

The most popular procedure for genitalia is the labiaplasty — nearly 11,000 were performed in the United States in 2024.

During a labiaplasty, Dr. McHugh goes in and trims away the excess tissue to restore symmetry and to make sure that the labia minora aren’t hanging down and interfering with sex and clothing. Once he removes the excess tissue, he sutures the area and you can go home to recover.

Rest assured, Dr. McHugh first administers anesthesia so that you’re comfortable throughout the procedure. This might be general or local anesthesia, depending upon your needs and circumstances.

In most cases, women can go home the same day after their labiaplasty to recover.

Recovering from a labiaplasty

It’s a good idea to plan for a light week after your labiaplasty so that you have time and space to recover.

There’s going to be some soreness and discomfort, which can be managed with medications as well as frequent icing, which also helps to control swelling.

As you might imagine, you should avoid tampons and intercourse during recovery for about 4 to 6 weeks. We’ll monitor your progress and let you know when you can get back to tampon use and intercourse.
