Eyelid Surgery: A Minor Procedure That Delivers Major Facial Rejuvenation Results
They say that the eyes are the windows to the soul, but that becomes tricky if they’re being swallowed up by heavy and drooping eyelids. Luckily, there’s a relatively simple solution in eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty.
Eyelid surgery has captured a top 5 spot in plastic surgeries in the United States for several years now and around 120,000 blepharoplasties are performed each year.
At McHugh Plastic Surgery, Dr. Thomas McHugh has been performing eyelid surgeries for decades and we continue to be amazed by how this relatively minor procedure delivers big results. Let’s take a look.
What happens to your eyelids as you age
Some parts of your skin are more exposed to the sun, making them vulnerable to premature aging. This includes the delicate skin that forms your eyelids, as well as the skin below your eyes.
Compounding matters, when your eyelids and surrounding skin start to succumb to aging and lose elasticity, the thin layer of fat beneath the skin can shift, effectively changing the contour and shape of these areas.
As a result, many people find that their upper lids droop down and fat deposits make their eyes look puffy. The bottom lid can also pull away from the eyeball and become looser as bags form and fat shifts in that area.
What we can accomplish during eyelid surgery
The goal of most eyelid surgeries is to recontour your eyelids so that your eyes can open back up and shine brightly. To do this, Dr. McHugh can perform a number of steps, including:
- Removing excess skin from your eyelids
- Removing or repositioning fat deposits in your upper lids and beneath your lower lids
- Tightening the muscles in your eyelids
- Tightening your lower lids
Not every eyelid surgery is the same. For example, some clients only want us to work on the upper lids while others want us to tackle both the upper and lower lids, as well as the undereye area.
Whatever the combination, the good news is that Dr. McHugh only uses local anesthesia or mild sedation to perform the procedure and you can go home the same day.
Eyelid surgery delivers big results
Whether your eyes are the windows to your soul or not, they do take center stage on your face. Between your eyes and your smile, these are the two things that most people notice first about you, so they’re important features.
One of the biggest complaints we hear from patients is that their drooping eyelids are making them look perennially tired, even when they’re feeling well rested. So, that’s one of the first things patients tell us afterward: They love how this simple procedure makes them look completely refreshed and vibrant.
Another complaint is that drooping upper lids and sagging lower lids can really age a person. With blepharoplasty, we can make you look years younger by tightening it all up.
We’ve also had patients whose eyelids sagged so far down that they were in their fields of vision, and eyelid surgery allowed them to see fully and clearly again.
In all of these examples, our clients have been amazed at the difference eyelid surgery can make. Whether it’s making a person look more energetic, youthful, and alert, or whether it was designed to improve vision, eyelid surgery has answered the call every time.
If you’d like to explore how eyelid surgery can improve your appearance, your vision, or both, we invite you to contact our office in The Woodlands, Texas, to schedule a consultation.
