SculpSure® vs. Liposuction: How to Decide Which Option Fits Your Body Shape Goals

SculpSure® vs. Liposuction: How to Decide Which Option Fits Your Body Shape Goals

You have an ideal body shape in mind, and you’ve been slowly working your way toward it through diet and exercise. Unfortunately, while your efforts show up on the scale, they’re less evident on your body, thanks to lingering pockets of stubborn fat.

You’re far from alone in this frustration, which explains why liposuction sits at the top of cosmetic surgical procedures in the United States, with nearly 350,000 procedures in 2024 alone. Combine this with nearly half a million non-surgical fat reduction procedures, including SculpSure®, and you can see that millions of Americans share your goal of getting rid of fat.

At McHugh Plastic Surgery, Dr. Thomas McHugh meets your body shaping needs with a range of services, including liposuction and SculpSure®. Here, we look at both options to help you make the best decision for your body contouring goals.

Liposuction — the gold standard for getting rid of fat

Let’s first look at liposuction, which is a surgical procedure that removes fat in your target areas.

To do this, Dr. McHugh first uses local or general anesthesia to make sure you’re comfortable. Then, he inserts a cannula (a thin metal tube) under your skin and into your treatment areas, where it dislodges and suctions away the fat.

Liposuction has evolved; it now benefits from advanced laser technologies that direct energy into the fat to cause it to loosen and liquefy, making it easier for Dr. McHugh to remove.

Liposuction is ideal for people who are within 30% of their ideal body weight, and this is an important point — liposuction shouldn't be viewed as a weight loss tool, but as a body-shaping one.

Speaking of body shaping, we can use liposuction in many different areas, including your:

Liposuction is a more invasive procedure than SculpSure and requires some recovery time afterward — count on several weeks overall. During this time, you’ll need to manage wound care in early recovery and wear compression garments while your body heals and resettles.

SculpSure — non-invasive fat reduction

Like liposuction, SculpSure is ideal for directly targeting stubborn pockets of fat. After all, spot reduction — the idea that you can target certain fat deposits through exercise — is largely not possible.

With SculpSure (and liposuction), we work around this hurdle to target the fat directly. In the case of SculpSure, we deliver thermal energy into the fat cells to destroy them. This energy passes harmlessly through your skin to target the fat below and allows us to remove up to 24% of the fat cells in your treatment areas.

Each SculpSure treatment takes only about 25 minutes, and there’s no downtime afterward. Most of our patients benefit from a series of SculpSure treatments, which we space apart to allow time for your body to reabsorb the destroyed fat cells.

Liposuction and SculpSure: A side-by-side comparison

So, now let’s provide some direct comparisons between liposuction and SculpSure to help you make an informed decision.

We should also point out that liposuction is surgery, which should factor into decision-making. People in poor health shouldn’t opt for elective procedures like liposuction, making SculpSure a better choice.
