Achieve a More Youthful Appearance With a Neck Lift
Perhaps you used to have a “good side” that you loved to show off, but a sagging neck has wreaked havoc on your profile. Or maybe your profile is still intact, but the skin around your neck is sagging down, creating rings of loose tissue.
Whatever is happening in your neck, you know one thing — it’s altering your appearance and making you look much older than you’d like.
And that’s exactly where a neck lift can prove invaluable, which explains why more than 22,000 neck lifts were performed in the United States in 2024 alone.
At McHugh Plastic Surgery, Dr. Thomas McHugh has performed his fair share of facial surgeries including neck lifts, which can deliver surprisingly powerful anti-aging results.
Here’s a look at how a neck lift can boost your confidence in your appearance.
The aging neck
Let’s first discuss how your neck ages to better understand what we accomplish with a neck lift. In brief, several forces come together to create an aging neck, starting with lax skin. As you age, your skin loses collagen and elastin, the proteins that give your skin tone and elasticity.
This increasing deficit can lead to sagging skin, which can be really noticeable in your neck area as your skin succumbs to gravity and droops down. As we mentioned, this can lead to rings of aging skin, as well as a wattle, which can really do a number on your profile as you develop the dreaded turkey neck.
Another aging process in your neck involves your platysmal bands, which are two muscles on either side of your neck that can become more prominent as you age, blurring your profile and giving your neck a ropey appearance.
Giving your aging neck a lift
While every neck lift that Dr. McHugh performs is tailored to each patient’s wishes, we want to discuss what we can accomplish in broad terms. A neck lift is a procedure in which we can:
- Address jowls around your chin
- Tighten and remove loose skin around your neck
- Remove fat deposits from the submental area (under your chin)
- Tighten your platysmal bands for improved contour
- Rearrange fat and muscle for a smoother and more youthful profile
Again, no two neck lift procedures are alike and we can also combine them with some complementary and non-surgical procedures, such as:
- Liposuction to remove excess fat
- Botox® to relax platysmal bands
- Dermal fillers to even out the contour
- Collagen-inducing laser treatments
Between the neck lift and these tools, we can get your neck looking like it did years ago.
The neck lift journey
When Dr. McHugh performs a neck lift, he uses general anesthesia or sedation so you won’t feel a thing.
Depending on your procedure, Dr. McHugh will make an incision around your chin and/or the sides of your face down around your ears, taking great care to minimize scarring.
From there, Dr. McHugh performs the necessary trimming, removing, and repositioning and then he closes the incisions.
Once we’re sure everything went well and that you’re fully alert, someone can take you home for your recovery, which should take a few weeks.
We know this description is brief, but rest assured, we go over everything in detail with you so you know what to expect during and after your neck lift.
