You Can Get Rid of Unwanted Hair in These Key Areas

If you counted up the hours you spend removing unwanted body hair through waxing, shaving, and plucking, you’d be exhausted just looking at the final tally. With summer around the corner, along with that more revealing wardrobe, you might want to consider laser hair removal, which can save you a good deal of hair-removing effort.

At McHugh Plastic Surgery, we offer cosmetic services that meet your goals from head to toe. After much research, Dr. Thomas McHugh has built up a considerable laser arsenal that addresses everything from cellulite to unwanted body hair.

If you’d like to be able to run out the door without worrying about body hair, explore the many places in which laser hair-removal technology excels.

How laser hair removal works

Before we get into the areas we can tackle with laser hair removal, let’s quickly review how this technology works. Using laser technology, Dr. McHugh delivers targeted pulses of light energy into your hair follicles, where melanin in your skin cells absorbs the energy as heat. This heat, in turn, impairs the ability of your follicles to produce more hair.

Where we can remove unwanted hair

Our laser hair-removal system is the perfect solution for a wide range of problematic areas, including your:

The skin in these regions tolerate the laser energy well, and the only area we do avoid is around your sensitive eyes.

The laser removal process

Depending on the size and location of the area where you want to get rid of hair, you’ll need to undergo several laser treatments — typically five to seven. One of the reasons for the need for multiple treatments is that your hair can be in one of three stages at any given time:

  1. Anagen — active growth
  2. Catagen — transitional phase
  3. Telogen — resting stage

When you embark on laser hair removal, we space the treatments apart to allow time for dormant and transitioning hair to come in, at which point we can target the follicles more easily.

To prepare for these treatments, we ask that you avoid darkening your skin too much, as we need to easily spot the follicles. You can still shave before your treatments, but avoid any hair-removal method that pulls the hair from the follicle. After your treatments, you should protect your skin with sunscreen.

When it comes to results, you can expect to gradually realize silky, smooth skin in your treatment areas as we progress through your treatments. You can enjoy your final results for months, if not years. As an added bonus, if hair does return to your treatment areas, it’s usually lighter and thinner, making follow-up treatments a snap.
