Which Is Best for Me: Botox® or Dermal Fillers?

When the latest statistics were released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, it came as no surprise that Botox® and its counterparts held the top position of minimally invasive cosmetic treatments in the United States in 2020, followed closely by dermal fillers in the number two spot.

Providers delivered nearly 8 million cosmetic injectable treatments (Botox and dermal fillers combined), helping scores of people turn back the clock on aging.

If you’re unsure where to begin when it comes to Botox or dermal fillers, our plastic surgeon at McHugh Plastic Surgery, Dr. Thomas McHugh, pulled together the following benefits of both treatments.

The two parts of your face

One of the best ways to describe the difference between Botox and dermal fillers is to divide your face in half — the top half and the bottom half.

The top half

If you’re bothered by wrinkles that have formed around your eyes, brows, and forehead, Botox is the best solution.

Botox was the first cosmetic injectable approved by the FDA to temporarily make moderate to severe frown lines, crow's feet, and forehead lines look better in adults. The active ingredient in Botox is onabotulinumtoxin A, which is a neurotoxin that quiets the muscles responsible for those wrinkles in the top half of your face.

We deliver the Botox by injection, and your results start revealing themselves after a day or two, at which point your eyes will once again be the focus instead of your wrinkles. Botox results typically last three to four months, at which point you can return for another treatment.

The bottom half

If you want to tackle cosmetic concerns on the bottom half of your face, dermal fillers are just the ticket.

We use industry-leading Juvéderm® fillers to:

The active ingredient in Juvéderm products is one that occurs naturally in your body — hyaluronic acid. This means that your body readily accepts the injections. Unlike Botox, your results with Juvéderm are immediate, and they last about 6-12 months.

Choosing the right cosmetic injectable

It’s hard for us to say here which cosmetic injectable is right for your goals without first sitting down with you to discuss them. We can say, however, that many of our clients choose a combination of Botox and dermal fillers to give their faces an all-over rejuvenation.

In fact, in mere minutes, we can administer both cosmetic injectables, and you’ll realize surprisingly significant results inside of a week. This makes cosmetic injectables a perfect choice for upcoming events during the holidays.

If you’d like to figure out which combination of injectables is best for your cosmetic goals, we invite you to contact our office in The Woodlands, Texas, to set up a consultation.
