Look Years Younger with a Neck Lift

As you look in the mirror, pulling the skin back on your face to rediscover that younger version of yourself under the sagging and wrinkling tissue, try pulling the skin on your neck back. What a difference a tauter neck can make in your overall appearance, providing a youthful pedestal for your face.

At McHugh Plastic Surgery, Dr. Thomas McHugh and our team want to ensure that our clients in  The Woodlands, Texas, achieve the younger look they desire. While our facelifts can go a long way toward that goal, a neck lift provides the all-important finishing touch. And in some cases, a neck lift alone can make a significant impact on your aging face.

Here’s a look at how a neck lift can shave years off your face.

The aging neck

As you age, there are a number of forces that are working against you — and these are powerful forces that are hard to avoid, especially in your neck.

Consider that starting in your 30s your tissue starts to gradually lose collagen and elastin, which are the proteins that provide structural support in your skin. While the loss is slow at first — typically 1% a year — the deficit can add up over time. And for women who are passing through perimenopause and menopause, the sudden drop in estrogen can speed up the loss of tissue support.

The end result is that your skin is left sagging and wrinkles begin to develop. As well, the thin layer of fat that was held in place by your younger skin begins to succumb to gravity and migrate downward with the loss of support.

As your tissue and fat begin to sag, they tend to gather at the lowest point — which means under your chin, along your jawline, and around your neck. And that’s how the dreaded turkey neck develops.

How your neck affects your appearance

A sagging neck can be traitorous for several reasons. Many people show signs of aging around their neck first, and a neck lift can delay an aged appearance by re-establishing a more youthful profile.

And if you’ve had work done on your face, a turkey neck can let the cat out of the bag on your efforts because of the marked contrast.

Giving your neck a lift

As we mentioned, a facelift is exceptionally effective at tightening the skin around your face, erasing the signs of aging by restoring a toned surface area. Well, a neck lift is equally effective for tightening the skin that sets off your face.

Also called a lower rhytidectomy, a neck lift is performed in much the same way as we do a facelift, just in a different location. Depending upon the extent of the problem, we can go about your neck lift using several techniques, including:

When you come in for your consultation, we sit down with you to review the problem and come up with the best plan for restoring youth and vitality to your face with a neck lift.
